Are happier social workers better social workers?

This week, hosts Vince and Tilly ask the question: 'do happier social workers make better social workers?'
Inspired by American social worker Ashley Campbell's column this week at mysocialworknews.com, our dynamic duo discuss the difference in our work when we're happy rather than struggling, ask whether it's ever acceptable to moan and complain in front of the people we support, and question how often our happiness as social workers is (and should be!) checked by our employers.

A final thought, And this is in line with your comments about unhappy people, it is hard to state what makes one social worker better than another without doing some kind of injustice to someone. What I would say is that a poorly supported, jaded or even currently traumatised social worker definitely needs a break.

What I would add though is being positive can be infectious And more likely to Stir motivation in those we support So long as the level of positivity doesn’t suggest. A person is out of touch.

A bit like you both I agreed to an extent. I am always mindful of what I have heard Termed the tyranny of positivity. I can’t remember who said it, sorry. But positivity without realism is akin to dreams without goals.
